I really really really wasn't going to post about PostSecret again. But I came across this recent interview with Frank Warren online and was glad to see this comment.
(FW): ". . . The last element that’s difficult to copy from PostSecret is that of the mediator. Having a mediary is critical for a couple of reasons. One is that if you don’t have a mediator, you can get a lot of negativity, a lot of negative comments. One thing I’ve tried to do is create a safe, non-judgmental place where people can share their secrets in a way where there’s not going to be any social ramification. They don’t have to worry about people posting a message ridiculing them right after they express something that makes them very vulnerable. "
So that seems to imply the open comments was not his intention.

I left an insanely long comment below, but forgot to include these two things: According to Blogger's TOS there is no limit to the number of comments. Since Blogspot is a free service, the income of the site, or lack thereof, is irrelevant. But, once again, with a daily count of 75,000 visitors, 4,000 comments in a week really isn't going to make a dent in anything, much less cause anything to crash. You're the only person I've heard who's had any problems accessing the site or the comments - and I'm involved in a forum with a BUUUUUNCH of people who are going batsh*t about it, sooo I'm thinking it was just you. Second (I actually may have said this already, not sure), the comments were turned on at the same time that all the other information customarily on the site was removed - the contact info, the suicide hotline links, etc. The fact that these changes were made simultaneously - comments on, info gone - points to a deliberate decision, not an accident or forgetfulness.
Also, the comments were on the posts from the previous week, which reinforces the fact that it couldn't have been an accident - I could see it if, say, he put up a new entry and maybe each entry has to be "comments disabled" individually and he just forgot, but he had to make the effort to go back into an old post to make the change. Nothing accidental about that.

I think there are both good and bad things about having a mediator on the Postsecrets site.
People may feel more confident to post their secrets without receiving negative comments, but it also makes the mediator too important. He has the power to decide which secret is posted and which comment is posted. That kind of power over people's secrets and opinions is what makes some people to see him almost as if he were Jesus, and to totally freak out if something changes on the site. They even started analyzing every little thing with the craziest theories, when he was just on vacation!
That's because everything depends on him on his site. He doesn't give his opinion, he doesn't show, but he's behind everything, deciding about people's secrets. He's like a "god almighty" and some people start seeing him like that. That's what give that special "aura" to the site.
I think people went crazy with the comments last week only because they were never allowed to do it before. They were like children that were never allowed to eat a candy before, so they ate them all at once. Because they are treated like children on the site.
Not everyone can comment, unlike other blogs, and Frank doesn't even post his email address anymore, so the only people who can sent in a comment are the ones who already have the address. That means it's always the same people commenting.
Don't get me wrong - I love Postsecrets. I read it every week and I think Frank had a great idea with this project. But I don't think he is the only one who can keep and decide about people's secrets.
There are other sites where people post their secrets without so many restrictions, and comments there are usually positive. People supporting each other. Besides, the judgmental-free thing is just an illusion, anyway.
So the Postsecrets way is not the only way. It can be very good for some people, but very bad for others who tend to depend too much on and idealize other people.
After all, it's only a blog. The world is not going to end if he doesn't post for a week.
